Interview Notes:
SAC- student school advisory committee. They give you a budget and it is the community members. Provide resources.
PTA- Gives funds
We also pay for brain pop junior- for primary students and ELL students- quizzes activities days, teacher section
School grades- Has been an A most of the time, but was a B once. However, this year, if gains were looked at, it would have been a C
Biggest problem- Students with disabilities are not making gains. How would the school target this group and allow them to make gains throughout the years?
Attendance and Suspensions – We are good compared to other schools in county. Three suspensions for the year versus a lot more in title 1 schools – this is indicative of this community.
Big issue – tardies. This needs to be combatted as school starts right away. Team time was created in order to help with tardies in order t encourage students to come earlier – it has not improved that greatly.
SAC- administration and one of our fourth grade teachers and guidance counsellors.
SAC group – parents, business community partners and teachers.
Schools can earn a 5 star award if the school meets all it goals. One of them is to have a SAC team that has the correct % of staff, community members, parents etc.
One thing we do to help our students is “Saturday Academy”. This is two Saturdays where kids can come and get extra time for learning. This school ends earlier than a lot out there. For our population, the Saturdays and school interventions are what work.
Goals:
All male comic book club for third grade- to show that there is another genre out there to combat research that they stop reading after 3rd grade for pleasure. To get them back into loving reading again.
This investigation gave me great insight into my community. From my KLEW chart, it can be seen that I have learned a lot more than I knew before. Firstly, I learned more about the SAC and the PTA, and I now know more of the resources that are available to the school. Possibly, I can utilize these resources for the benefit of my students. Furthermore, I learned about brain pop and brain pop junior, and was given the log in information so that I can access this whenever I want. This has a variety of resources that I can use in the classroom. I also learned about school grades. Though the school has an A, the gains have been very little. I learned that students with disabilities are mainly the ones who are not making gains, and thus this issue needs to be targeted.
Something I found interesting was the little suspensions or referrals Claywell has experienced. This reflects the type of community it is. However, there are a lot of tardies. It was interesting to learn that this is why team time was implemented first thing in the morning, though there has not been much of an improvement since. The interviewee expressed a love and closeness for her community, reflecting the bond that exists there. The interview truly gave me a better understand of the community, as well as Claywell itself.

- Student achievement will increase when teachers are using various strategies to deliver engaging, differentiated instruction.

- Any challenges that the community has faced? – "I think our population has changed over time. We have gotten more Hispanic population and a higher ELL altogether. We have Haitians, Egyptians a lot of people from Venezuela. This is our highest rate of influx at this portion of the year. Hard for classroom teacher to adapt to new student, especially if they are ESE or ELL."
- What is the best part of this community? – "I love these families and I get to have a relationship with students and parents. I get to know them well. They have become lifetime friends. I love the people and the kids here. I feel very fortunate that I was able to work in my neighborhood school."
- What made you decide to come to Claywell?- " Claywell was my neighborhood and I was already a media specialist and had volunteered here at the media center. Got hired as 4th grade teacher and then got hired as media specialist."
- What is something really cool that you can do with the kids? – "My background is in Science. I am able to use my science background here with students. Started off studying bio engineering. Google CS first, clubs, learning scratch programming, FETC conference and saw scholastic had this program called core clips and so it looked really good and ofc you have to pay for it but right now we are on the 30 day trial and we can use this program. I love and hate technology. I love it for what it can do. Hate it cuz I have to fix everything."
- "Cell phone tower saves us about $13000.00 PTA helps us raise money. Four student computers in every classroom which Is really lucky."
