"I just think as teachers, we've kind of gone along with what we've been handed to teach. We forget about the other important things that would connect the child to the learning." This line stands out to me extremely significantly. In my Science course, we have been discussing this topic also. Unfortunately, teaching is often shallow and lacks interaction. Students are not able to grasp concepts and understand them on a fundamental level due to teachers handing along what they've been given. Of course, one of the best ways that a teacher can get through to a student is by knowing him or her personally. Being able to know what previous knowledge the student possesses, his or her learning style and preferences is vital in this process. Standardized testing and curriculum hinders the ability for teachers to truly get to know their students, and this is something I truly hope would be less prevalent in the future.
It is also extremely important for a teacher to know how a student perceives his or her own self. Teaching should never be a passive process, and students' feelings and opinions should always be taken into consideration in order to make for a more effective curriculum.
