This week I focused on greeting every student and getting to know each one. I never thought much about this process, but forming this personal connection with each student is vital for classroom climate, environment and well being. As each student walked through the door, I greeted them, and asked them how their morning was. I can tell that they were pleasantly surprised, and enjoyed sharing information with me. Every student in the classroom was more than willing to tell me something about themselves (that I recorded as seen in the picture), and I can see that they appreciated the extra effort taken for me to get to know them on a more personal level. For the rest of the day, the students seemed more responsive to me, and I felt more welcomed into the classroom. I believe that the feelings of warmth and caring that they felt from me were reciprocated back to me from them. Knowing students personally is a major asset to classroom management. Knowing a student's learning style, preferences, challenges and so on is all information necessary for forming classroom procedures and expectations. Additionally, it may give the teacher insight as to why a student may be doing a certain thing, or why a particular strategy is not working. Additionally, if students are assured that the teacher cares about them personally, and values their personal life, hobbies and personalities, I believe that they would be more likely to meet classroom expectations, and work towards a well managed classroom. |
